Prayer

It was Goethe who said, “If you become still, help is already at hand,” and Meister Eckhart who taught that God speaks his eternal word only to the truly tranquil soul. Of that great seeker of truth, Soren Kierkegaard, it was said:

“As his prayers became more and more recollected, he himself had less and less to say. Finally he became quite still. In his tranquillity he became a listener. At first he had believed that to pray meant to talk, but he learnt that prayer was not even silence: it was listening. And so it is: prayer is not hearing oneself talk. Prayer is becoming still, remaining still and waiting till one hears God.”

There is still one step further: to the place where prayer becomes constant, above sound and silence, and all difference between yourself and the universe and their transcendence has been forever dissolved in the oneness.
