The That People

by Author::Te Ana Vava

There has always been a very small minority of people who, when asked the solution of a problem or simply what they thought of the universe, either smiled and kept silent or pointed to something and said, “Look at That”.

Usually their fellowmen classified them among the simpleminded – which they really were, being the opposite of ordinary complexminded people. Where ordinary people saw complicated situations, indissoluble problems, logical paradoxes, the That people burst out laughing, shrugged their shoulders and went their way.

Sometimes they tried to explain: “That is beyond mind,” (Buddha). Or: “If you bring out that which is in you, you will be saved,” (Jesus).

But how to explain to a fish: “That which you seek is not in the sea?” Or how to tell as learned man: “Forget your learning”?

Sometimes the learned ones classified the That people as religious believers. It was as if you called somebody who looked at the high mountains a believer in mountains because others could see only clouds.

Sometimes the non-seers called the That-seers philosophers, to indicate that what they were speaking o was a creation of mind and their spiritual insight a play of words.

Then there were the superstitious believers in Santa Clauses or Paradises beyond, who called the That people heretics or atheists. But That is as far beyond the Santa Clauses and the church heavens as it is beyond the mental constructions of the mind people.

That simply is.

It doesn't need to be taught in schools like philosophies or religions, just as you don't have to teach the smell of a rose or the freshness of water.

But if you have a longing in you to possess that which the That people have, then you must not see it as a philosophy which you have to study in old books or as a religious belief you have to accept blindly, telling yourself, “I believe it, I believe it, I believe it.” Both misconceptions would be disastrous for your quest. You would get a lot of words, but not That.

Find one of the That people. They are not so rare if you keep looking for them. They can easily be recognised. They never try to convert anyone. They won't answer with quotations from holy books. They don't speak philosophical mumbo-jumbo. They always smile and let you partake in their fun. Because That is lots and lots of fun. Unending fun.

Ask them if they know That, if they have heard it, seen it, touched it, tasted it, become one with it? If they can answer yes to all those questions, ask them to cut a piece of it and give it to you.

They can, because to them That is the only reality.
