Odissi Dance

Objective

Auroville is a unique platform for a multicultural exchange. We want to create in this huge platform a tiny but vital space where Indian culture – philosophy, mythology and various art forms, may be understood and experienced through Odissi dance – one of the many inspiring classical dances of India.

Activity details

In the weekly classes held in Auroville, Ms. Sangeeta Das nurtures her students’ body, mind and soul, very lovingly always focusing on authenticity and perfection. Ms. Sangeeta Das is a well known exponent and researcher of Odissi dance, and she carries this trait whereever she goes. She invites her students to enquire and is always there to guide and support. Seven students took part in the classes this year.

Outcomes

  • Students understood better the Indian culture, its spiritual revelations and the way it expresses its wisdom through its art forms.
  • They developed their stamina, became stronger and increased the sense of body coordination. They learnt to discipline themselves, increased their will power and their capacity to concentrate.
  • They developed a passion for beauty and harmony and channeled and refined their emotions by working on them through the dance form.
