Decisions
(Surendranath Jauhar:) “Procurement and distribution of coal was one of our chief lines of business. We used to purchase coal from different collieries and then sell the same in different markets in quite a number of provinces. Our sale was about 1500 to 2000 wagons per month.
We were always thinking of purchasing a suitable coal-colliery of our own in the coal-fields of Jharia or Dhanbad. And in course of this we received an offer of an important colliery and we were negotiating to purchase the same. But now the matter had to be decided by the Mother. I took a big file containing full details and drawings of the colliery to refer and discuss the matter with the Mother.
I said, “Mother, we have an offer to purchase the colliery and I wish to discuss the details with you.” She spontaneously said, “No! It is not to be purchased.”
I said, “Mother, you told me the business of S. N. Sunderson & Co. is now to be run by you. Is this the way to run a business? I have not yet opened the papers and you have not even asked about any details of the colliery and you have proclaimed your decision ‘No’.”
Mother said, “Yes, that is my method. I do not decide the matters by discussing the details. I immediately refer the matter somewhere and the decision comes and I convey the same to you.”
I said, “It is very surprising.”
She said, “Yes, but you can also attain such powers. It is not at all difficult. But only you have to surrender completely to the power.” ”[1]
